Street Project Information and Updates

We are excited to get our major street project started. This street project will include Walnut, Spruce, Chestnut, and Vine Street from 4th to 8th Street and all the side streets in between!

Original Plan 8/7/2023 The project has been split into 8 phases, with each phase taking about 6 months to complete. Phase 1, Vine from 4th to 6th, is scheduled to begin in August 2023! Phase 2, Chestnut from 4th to 6th, is scheduled for October. Then each phase after that will be determined once the project gets started.

Update 9/18/2023 As we have gotten into the project it has become clear that, due to the necessary utility updates, it will be more efficient to complete full streets at a time, instead of splitting the work into different phases. That being said the updated timeline is as follows: Vine (4th-6th) August 21, 2023- May 2024; Vine (6th-8th) October 8th, 2023- May 2024; Chestnut (4th-6th) January 2024- September 2024; Chestnut (6th-8th) February 2024-Septemeber 2024. Look for updates on Walnut Street and Spruce Street in the summer of 2024.

Update 12/6/2023 Due to the great progress on Vine, Chestnut is now able to start at an earlier date! As of now, Timelines will be estimated to remain the same, BUT Chestnut Street will be closed starting December 26th. Demolition will begin shortly after that. Please refer to the updated "Estimated Timeline" Document below, or the "Recent News" update for more complete information.

Update 2/13/2024 We are working towards moving to the next phase of our Street Project and have a few updates. First, Wednesday, February 14th water will be turned off for residents who have been notified through Door Knockers. The estimated time for this turn-off is from 8am-1pm. As we are updating the infrastructure in Wamego it is important to note that we try to be as accurate as possible when informing the public but due to the scale of this project, there have been a few unexpected situations come up. We appreciate your patience during this project and are eager to have new, high-quality, dependable infrastructure when the project wraps up. Additionally, Thursday, February 15th the City of Wamego will have crews taking out the marked trees on Chestnut Street from 6th to 8th Street. The larger trees will be removed at a later date in February that is still to be determined.

Update 3/4/2024 Phase 2B of our street project is scheduled to begin on March 11th. This phase of the project includes Chestnut Street from 6th to 8th Street. On March 11th this section of road will be closed and demolition will begin.

Update 5/23/2024 We are excited to announce the progress of our street project! As we begin the final stages of our work on Vine Street, we want to share some important updates and details with our residents. Vine Street will be open to local thru traffic starting in June. To maintain a safe and efficient construction zone, all incomplete sections of Vine Street will be no parking from 7 AM to 5 PM Monday-Friday until all construction is finished. Certain areas, approximately one block at a time, will be no parking zones until the sidewalks and driveways are completed. These areas will be clearly marked with road cones and instructions and will work down the street through summer. Once the sidewalks and driveways are poured and construction moves to the next block, those sections will be open for use, and the parking regulations will no longer apply. We aim to complete all work on Vine Street, including streets, utilities, sidewalks, and driveways, in August. Please note that this timeline is a best estimate and may change due to various factors.

Update 6/12/2024 6th Street between Vine and Spruce will be completed soon! Once 6th Street opens completely, 5th and 7th Street, between Vine and Spruce will close. The opening and closures of these streets are currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 19th.

Update 7/3/2024 Vine Street Independence Day Update: We're excited to announce that Vine Street is now open to local through traffic and emergency vehicles for Independence Day!  Enjoy the holiday with convenient parking available all day. Please note that all sidewalks will remain closed for your safety. After the 4th of July, construction barrels will be placed along the road with clear parking instructions: no parking 7AM-5PM, Monday-Friday until construction is completed.

Update 10/2/2024 Chestnut Street paving is scheduled to be completed the week of October 14th, with sidewalk grading starting the same week and sidewalk pouring expected the following week. Even though paving will be done, Chestnut won’t open to traffic right away—we still have work to finish on sidewalks, and ensuring the safety of our construction crews is a top priority. We’ll provide updates on when streets will officially open as we get closer! 6th Street paving is set to begin in early November. Spruce Street (4th to 6th) will close the week of October 14th!  Utility work is planned to start in early November and continue through the winter. Spruce from 6th to 8th will remain open until 6th Street is completed!  Alley Access for Chestnut Street residents: Once Spruce Street closes, expect access to come from Walnut Street.

Update 12/6/2024 Spruce Street (6th to 8th) and 5th & 7th Streets (Chestnut to Spruce) will close Monday, December 9th! Evening and weekend parking will be allowed on Chestnut starting next week, marked with construction barrels. Please note: parking will still not be permitted Monday-Friday 7AM-5PM. Alley Access: After this closure, access to the alley between Chestnut and Spruce will be available from 4th, 6th, and 8th Streets.

*All Timelines are weather-dependent and could change due to several factors.

This project is a huge undertaking that includes replacing all streets, curbs, storm drains, sidewalks, waterlines, and sewer lines, and we thank Bayer Construction and Olsson for taking it on.
